Howdy folks! It's the 20th edition of the Ishara International Puppet Theatre Festival in 2024, so we're cracking open the bubbly & putting on party hats! Join us in celebrating this momentous milestone & save the dates on your calendar - from the 16th to the 28th February 2014 - the festival will be held at (place) and (place).

For our 20th anniversary, we've curated a special line up of breath-taking performances, incredible performers & live entertainment for the entire family like never before! From India to France, Turkey, Sri Lanka, USA and Taiwan to Brazil, Korea to Russia & more- the 2024 festival brings together a diverse range of puppeteers & voices from around the world, united by their joy of storytelling.

Fuelled by creativity, passion & a deep love for storytelling, the festival began in 2001, with a dream to celebrate the art of puppeteers. From those humble beginnings, Ishara has grown into one of Asia's largest?? puppet festivals. The festival has brought together over a 100+ puppeteers, artists & performers from India & around the world; opening our minds to new forms of performance art, & our hearts to the joy of puppetry.

Produced by Teamwork Productions, thousands of visitors support us each year, & visit the festival to see traditional to modern forms of puppetry, ranging from rod to string puppets; to mixed performances with dance, theatre, music & more. Whether you're age nine or ninety - get ready to be mesmerized & dazzled by the best India & the world has to offer!

The Ishara International Puppet Theatre Festival is largely supported by the Ishara Puppet Theatre Trust. Corporate houses, organisations, media entities & individual donors are welcome to partner and help promote this festival and art form. Stefan Zweig's timeless story 'The Legend of the Third Dove' comes to life, in this moving puppetry production. Noah sent three doves from his Ark in the middle of the great flood. The first came back with nothing, showing the earth was still flooded. The second returned with an olive branch, a sign that life was beginning again. The third dove never returns & we follow her journey over the renewed earth. She settles down in the forest for eternity, but is awakened once again by mankind at war with each other. Since then, she flies continuously, searching for peace & harmony. The magical show will engage the imagination of the young & old alike, while teaching one the importance of humanity.

Miguel de Cervantes Spain has a fascinating encounter with the popular culture of the Brazilian Northeast in this uniquely witty show. Don Quixote & his faithful squire Sancho set out to have a chivalrous adventure in the 17th century Spain, & magically end up in 21st century Brazil - right in the middle of Pernambuco's carnival! The two adventurers are arrested by the local police, treated like illegal immigrants, & then escape from a castle to more mayhem on a ship. The hapless duo next encounter the inhabitants of Northeast Brazil from the Mamulengo like Simao, Sargento Peinha, Quiteria & get mixed up in their merry misadventures. There's plenty of satire & fun for the whole family in this rollicking performance!

Trying to find her way home, she has her flippers full with a quirky artistic monkey she befriends & the scary giant sea monster she encounters. Will the penguin ever make it home? Highlighting the importance of imagination in both science & art; it's a one of a kind show featuring marionettes, rod puppets, audience member puppeteers & even live concertina music. It's a musical & visual delight for all.

Russia's most famous puppet character is brought back to life in this slap happy performance! A celebration of 400 years of tradition & lots of imagination, this adaptation finds our hero in his most colourful avatar ever. Petrushka is rude, has a pipsqueak voice & thinks he’s always right! The naughty chap loves to hit everyone with his truncheon, from his poor doctor to a cute little doggy. After he gets in trouble with the devil himself, Petrushka learns to changes his ways & be a nicer person. Along the way he also finds his true love. This traditional performance unfolds as short comic vignettes, filled with colourful puppets & foot tapping music. It's a whole load of fun for kids and grownups alike.

Are you a cat lover or a dog person? Either way, this show is for you! Teeming with comedy, wit & an abundance of bravura, this wordless performance portrays the delightful & humorous adventures between an owner & his two mischievous pets. Our puppy pal does not appreciate his owner's feline friend - so the dog is angry - Arf! The cat thinks she's the boss& wants the nice doggy gone so hiss! They fight all the time about everything - it's the age-old battle of cats and dogs. Will the poor owner be able to make the dog & cat live together happily? Employing traditional Taiwanese glove puppetry techniques, this contemporary show will tickle the imagination of the young & old alike.

Ganwary Podi Sirina was one of the founders of the Sri Lankan traditional strings puppets art form. In this unique show, his great grandson Indika, along with his 10 year old son Sanush carry on the family tradition! From the village of Ambalongoda in the south of the island, get ready for a fabulous visual spectacle of Sri Lanka's grand cultural heritage. There's the dancing girl giving the traditional blessing, the Ambalangoda doing the joker dance, the Sanghadoi talking head, the spectacular Fire Devil dance & more! Audiences will have the time of their life as colourful puppets of all shapes & sizes, dance & music blend together; paying homage to the country's past & present.

In the slapstick tradition of Punch & Judy and ItalianGuaratelle, meet the mischievous Hong Dongji & his friends! No matter what misfortune or accident comes his way, Hong is a happy go lucky chap who wants to make everyone in his village happy too. When the monster Ismi suddenly appears in the village & starts gobbling up the villagers, our spunky hero decides to teach the monster a lesson he won't ever forget! After defeating Ismi with his funky dance moves, Hong has to now face the village's evil & corrupt district magistrate, who's an even bigger villain. What happens next is a big surprise, & the audience discovers the true meaning of being a hero.

Ishara brings Hans Christian Andersen's timeless tale to life as a dazzling puppet experience. On his journey to discover his place in the world, the duckling encounters many characters that are different from him. He tries to be like them, but each time fails & is shamed, confronted by colour, society, pride, caste of each character. Eventually he grows in a beautiful bird & takes flight, realizing that the beauty we all look for is only skin deep. So remember never to judge a book by its cover. In this show, each unique puppet / animal / character is made from regional textiles of India, bringing to life the beauty of Indian weavers. These shall be displayed with information, as you walk into the theatre.
