The 18Th Ishara International Puppet Festival 2020
 

It's that magical time of the year again! The Ishara International Puppet Theatre Festival is here to enrich & inspire your life with some of the greatest stories from India & across the world. We're celebrating our 18th anniversary with a variety of breathtaking performances, musical wonders and a few surprises! Alongside the best from India on display - from Turkey to Spain, Germany to Finland - Ishara has once again travelled around the globe to curate a fantastic line-up for 2020.

The festival is nurtured & supported by the Ishara Puppet Theatre Trust, India's leading established platform for Indian & International puppetry. From humble beginnings in 2001, we've matured into one of Asia's largest & most prestigious puppet festivals. Thousands of visitors support us each year, and grace the festival to see traditional to modern forms of puppetry, ranging from rod to string puppets; to mixed performances with dance, theatre, music & more. We have entertained, educated and empowered both the young and old, through award winning puppetry productions & many educational workshops.

Produced by Teamwork Productions; the festival has brought to India over 160 international puppetry companies & promoted numerous indigenous productions. Countries which have participated & showcased their works include the UK, Spain, Turkey, Brazil, Sweden, Norway, Israel, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Taiwan, Japan, Iran, Afghanistan, Ireland, Belgium, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Australia & USA.

This year the 18th Ishara International Puppet Theatre Festival will take place from 14th to 24th February 2020 at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi & Tagore Theatre, Chandigarh.

The Fisherman & the Golden Fish

Be prepared to be amazed by this colourful adaptation of the classic Russian children's tale by Alexander Pushkin. An old & very poor fisherman catches a beautiful golden fish in the sea, who grants him a wish if he will let him go. He lets the fish go without asking for anything, but when he goes home, his greedy wife sends him back to wish for her. How many silly things will the fisherman wish for before his wife can be content? Filled with magical stop motion puppets, lively music & Russian inspired scenery - this imaginative and rib tickling show has a powerful message about how to be happy with whatever you have in life.

Get ready to laugh and cry along with the crazy and colourfulPipa as he reminds one and all the meaning of true love. He's funny, smart and has travelled around the world, but poor Pipa has never fallen in love. Then he meets the lovely Nina and its love at first sight for our poor hero. To get her sweet kiss, he has to fight the mean & ferocious Mr. Crocodile, and not get eaten! Inspired by the traditional glove puppet theatre, this topsy-turvy musical filled comedy will show what happens when you give love a chance, even if it happens in an unconventional way.

What did the great artists like Picasso, Van Gogh & Salvador Dali have in common? All three knew a little nap would enable them to dream fresh ideas for paintings. Our hero is a painter just like them, who desperately needs a little nap, after a hard day's work. He can't get sleep, so he lets his imagination run wild. He searches through his art materials and voila - it's magic! Spectacular puppets & colourful sets will keep the audiences fully engrossed all the way through. Made up of little vignettes, each episode is a fantastic visual delight of what goes through an artist's mind, whether he's dreaming or awake.

It's a warm& big hearted performance of poetic vignettes - asking us to dream and appreciate the simple things in life. The audience will smile as a shy character learns about life, on the road to becoming a grown-up. Inspired by the puppeteer's own childhood memories and dedicated to her father, this is a universal story we can all relate to.

The Boy & The Raven

A small boy is separated from his parents in a world at war, and lives all by himself. In a time full of chaos, an injured raven falls down from the sky, landing next to the lonely child. He takes the bird home and slowly nurses him back to health. Even without a common language, the boy & his little friend understand each other. A unique, thought provoking, wordless performance - about extraordinary friendships, the horrors of war and survival - all seen from a young child's perspective. Hans Christian Andersen's timeless children's favourite is brought to life as a spectacular 4D puppet experience with magical special effects & heart warming music! The poor duckling is constantly teased and made of fun of because everyone thinks he's very ugly. We watch his adventures as he goes out in the world through the seasons - from the arrival of summer to lovely autumn, the harsh winter to finally colourful spring. When all hope of finding a friend seems lost, he finds many and discovers that he's really beautiful. It's a reaffirming life lesson for all ages - everyone is beautiful even if it doesn't always appear that way.

When Land Becomes Water!

A creative collaboration between conductor Evegny Bushkov & the Symphony Orchestra of India (SOI), composer Airat Ichmouratov, Dadi Pudumjee & the Ishara puppet theatre Trust; this visually stunning extravaganza was commissioned by the NCPA for its 50th Anniversary. Based around Neeta Premchand's work on the great flood in Indian, Biblical and Mesopotamian mythology - the timeless tales here show that no matter what cultural barriers separate us, in the end we are all the same in God's eyes. The world today needs joy & compassion more than ever before and this show transports us deep within the intimate humanity that binds our souls. An original & contemporary performance, full of moving characters, divine music & beautiful sets - we learn that after every storm, life does get renewed and better.
